Backpacking

When I saw an opportunity to work in the Inyo National Forest, I was super excited to move to a small town with access to the outdoors. I was stoked to be around people who enjoy recreating outside.

I am from Compton, the closest national forest to me is the Angeles. I grew up going there with my dad and brother. It was also my safe space during quarantine, allowing me to hang out and hike with loved ones. Prior to my time in Bishop and Inyo, outdoor recreation was hiking and camping for me. In the month of November, I was able to plan out a backpacking trip with a couple of friends. Backpacking is something that I have been wanting to do for a while now. The area we chose was off of Rock Creek, Little Lakes Valley, an area that I frequent as a recreation technician.

Backpacking gear is pricey, luckily I was able to borrow some from housemates and friends to make this trip as comfortable as possible. It was a one night trip spanning a total of about 15 miles. It even snowed overnight! This factor did make the trip a little more challenging; it seemed as the copious amount of layers I had on made little to no effect. I was still cold. More than anything, this was a learning experience; I am capable of walking many miles with a 30+ pound pack on. I should plan ahead more meticulously, regarding the importance of gear, especially weather specific ones. I hope to continue to grow as an outdoors person and continue to surround myself with people who are happy to share their knowledge and experience. I hope to be able to share these experiences with loved ones from home in the near future.
